In reply to: Richard K. Branton 's message, "Wishing" on Tue October 23, 2018 04:26:14

"Wishing" as written and recorded by Buddy Holly (Bob Montgomery was the co-writer) is in the key of E major, with the C#m chord being the relative minor.

The bridge, almost identical in structure to the bridge in "Everyday," breaks out of the standard E major chords (E, A, and B7) to a pattern I call "stacking fourths," for lack of a better term: A, D, G, C, resolving in B7, right back into the key of E where the song started.

Fortunately for us, Buddy could neither read nor write music. Like Bill Monroe before him and The Beatles and Marc Bolan (T. Rex) after, he clearly had a knack for putting chords and melodies together that sounded and felt good - a sort of magic that might have been hindered by an over-application of music THEORY, emphasis on theory.
