Hi Mike
Speaking only for myself, not for you or anyone else, as I certainly am not a songwriter, the writing of American Pie has to be one of the great achievements in American pop culture history. That awesome epic contains far more than it's share of reflection on the human spirit, longing, nostalgia, reflection, pathos, I could go on.
Combine that with a melody that all can sing along with, and you have a MASTERPIECE.
Why do you feel the need to quantify the worth of Don McLean in a monetary way?
I hope you are fully aware, no insult intended, that Don is one of the greatest fans of Buddy Holly alive.
I'm sure he agreed to play the surf largely out of sincere respect, not just cold $$$ reasons.
maybe it's a generational thing, but that awesome song was like a sermon on rock history for a world audience, not only Americans.
let's not forget the integral importance of that song, along with American Graffiti, in kickstarting the resurgence of Buddy Holly's legacy.
We all owe him a debt of gratitude.
