As I have repeated several times on this message board (some would say ad nauseum, and deservedly so), I found "The Chirpin' Crickets" EP at Thrifty Drugs in Long Beach in September of 1958. Shortly afterward, I saw "The Chirpin' Crickets" LP prominently displayed in the basement record department of the May Co. Like a complete idiot, I didn't purchase it because I already had my three favorites on the EP ("That'll Be The Day", "Oh Boy", and "Not Fade Away"), so why bother with the whole LP?
I first bought "The Buddy Holly Story" LP in 1966 when I found it in my local record store. I was completely enthralled with "Love's Made A Fool Of You" by the Bobby Fuller Four and wanted to hear more Buddy Holly compositions. I didn't buy "The Buddy Holly Story, Vol. II", but saw a listing in Phonolog for it.
What I was most intrigued by was a double LP released that year called "The Best Of Buddy Holly", puzzled by this mysterious title of one of the cuts "Rock Around With Ollie Vee". I wondered "Ollie Vee? Who is that? Bobby Vee's brother?" Then I started hearing it nightly on Oklahoma City's powerhouse KOMA and thought the title was "Rock To The Rhythm and Blues". That mystery wasn't cleared up till I found the Vocalion LP "The Great Buddy Holly" in a discount bin in Lompoc in early 1970.
As far as being a Buddy Holly completist, I was quite a late bloomer. I hope that this has been helpful and entertaining for you.
p.s. I didn't buy "The Best Of Buddy Holly" LP in '66 because as a high school student I needed the money for repairs on my '57 Chevy.
