Q,
Being a little (ok, a lot) older than you, my story starts in 1959. A group of us guys used to hang around together playing football or going bowling or, lots of times, playing cards at this one friend's house. He had a record player that would play LP's, and among his collection was the Buddy Holly Story. First time he played it was the first time I'd ever heard "It's So Easy". That song was - and is - so good, I think I almost wore out my friend's copy. Played that album everytime we were at his house!
Finally, about 2 years later, I got my own record player that played albums. My old RCA Victor played only 45's. The first LP I bought myself was, you guessed it, The Story. Eventually, I even bought a stereo copy. I think it was sometime in 1962 when I discovered Vol. 2 in Bonded Radio in my Pimlico neighborhood. Didn't look like the Buddy from Story, but I bought it anyway. I admit it took me a while to appreciate the songs. After all, I knew absolutely nothing about apartment tapes and overdubs and things like that. I only knew the hits plus the Story LP. In between buying those albums, I bought the one titled Buddy Holly. That guy on the cover looked like a college professor! BUT, the songs were there...definitely Buddy & the Crickets.
To be honest, it was the 70's and Bill Griggs and his BHMS before I found out about those apartment tapes as well as the Hansen & Petty overdubs (Hansen's overdub of Learning The Game sounds to me the way Buddy might've done it. It just has that Holly ring to it.) and who did what on background vocals.
Thanks, Bill, for sharing your knowledge with us all!
