This comment about UK audiences being disappointed by a lack of backing vocals has been overplayed and exaggerated and needs to be put to rest, for good!
Initially, I believe, there was some surprise that only Holly sang, and that the Crickets did not provide backing vocals.
I didn't see them perform on stage, but did watch the 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium' t/v show.
It was obvious that Holly was very nervous, and the sound balance was not good. At first I was surprised by the lack of backing vocals. But, within about 20 seconds, Holly's powerful vocal performance came through, and was so impressive and exciting that I had completely forgotten about backing vocals - he didn't need them!
I have spoken to a few people who did see them on stage, and no one has ever mentioned backing vocals. The comments always refer to the amazing volume of sound they created, and the closeness of the 'live' sound to the sound on their records.
So, disappointed UK fans? I don't think so!!
