No 'shooting' going on here, Chase!
Although I do admit that I thought your comment probably came from another source.
I have checked the Goldrosen book and found the following statement, which refers to the Crickets' performance on the t/v show - "viewers.........were surprised that only Holly sang", followed by "The British devotion to authenticity provoked some criticism of the Crickets on this count".
My impression is that when they got out on the road and were in control of their sound volume, balance etc on stage, and when Holly probably felt relaxed, the lack of background vocals was soon forgotten.
I'm sure you've seen the video of the Crickets playing 'Oh Boy' on the Ed Sullivan, with Holly's dynamic vocal performance. Imagine being in the audience and listening to the performance 'live'. Would you be bothered about the lack of background vocals?
I'm hoping that one day soon Holly's UK 'live' recording of 'Maybe Baby will finally be released. There are no background vocals, but I bet it is magic!!
