I think the operative phrase here is "of my understanding."
I'm not sure you're going to be able to find an encyclopedia or a dictionary that dictates that rock 'n roll and its characteristics is only of the 50's and didn't survive past '59. While one may only appreciate the rather primative approach that much of the 50's offered (and that's not a slam, if it was I wouldn't be here, enthralled with this board and its subject), but the fact is that rock did survive the 50's and flourished into the 60's and well beyond. Now one may not care for the style of the Dave Clark Five, but to ponder that the music you remember them for was "not remotely rock 'n roll" is indeed a lack of understanding.
