Ringo Starr was an inventive drummer but he was inventive only because he couldn't play the normal way.
Listen to his fills, theyre complete jumbles of normal rock fills, sometimes even backwards.
It's Ringo's timing that I take issue with. Simply put, he didn't have it.
Listen to the drumming at the end of "Strawberry Fields Forever" to hear what I mean.
In contrast, listen to anything drummed by Jerry Allison and realise that his timing is SPOT ON.
ALWAYS IN TIME - IMPECCABLY.
THAT is why he is up so high on the list of great rock drummers.
