Sid, what does being on the pop charts have to do with rock & roll? In 1956, Pat started to change from his sanitized r&b covers to pop. Certainly from 1957 through 1959 there are few Pat Boone songs that come close to rock & roll. The great majority of Pat's songs for those 3 years are pop tunes from Friendly Persuasion through April Love to With the Wind And The Rain In Your Hair.
Listen to Pat's Don't Forbid Me, then listen to Elvis. There's no beat in Pat's version.
Pat's '57 to '59 pop tunes
Friendly Persuasion (Thee I Love) - Pat Boone (#5)
Gee Whittakers! - Pat Boone (#19)
Anastasia - Pat Boone (#37)
April Love - Pat Boone (#1)
Bernadine - Pat Boone (#14)
Don't Forbid Me - Pat Boone (#1) Charles Singleton
I'm Waiting Just for You - Pat Boone (#27)
Love Letters In the Sand - Pat Boone (#1)
Remember You're Mine - Pat Boone (#6)
There's A Gold Mine In the Sky - Pat Boone (#14)
If Dreams Came True - Pat Boone (#7)
I'll Remember Tonight - Pat Boone (#34)
It's Too Soon To Know - Pat Boone (#4)
Sugar Moon - Pat Boone (#5)
That's How Much I Love You - Pat Boone (#39)
Twixt Twelve and Twenty - Pat Boone (#17)
With the Wind and the Rain In Your Hair - Pat Boone (#21)
