Dave H makes exactly the right point about drummers - timing is not essential but leading the band, driving it and holding it together is what is important.

Drum machines (and click tracks) playing in perfect time is what has taken the feeling out of a lot of music these days.

How would you explain drummers such as Keith Moon, John Bonham and even JI who drive their bands ?

Ringo falls into this type of drummer as does Charlie Watts and many others.
