No Dave, I wasn't wrong I was factually correct.
A drum machine isn't metronome time, it's PERFECT time.
Metronome (that is not digital metronomes) are not actually "Clock" time but do sway slightly and allow the music to breathe unlike a digital metronome or drum machine which is clock rigid.
Jerry Allison (I feel like beginning to repeat myself here) posesses metronome timing...Ringo doesn't.
As for "leading" then of course JI can do that. Check out the beginning to "Oh Boy!" which is a snare flam bringing the band in. In other words, JI sets it up.
As for The Beatles being "tight" on Rubber Soul, they had the benefit of 4-track recording which enabled easy subtraction and addition of any element. Let's not be under the impression they played any of this live.
All of the Buddy and Crickets basic tracks WERE played live (excepting the odd vocal or guitar overdub).
