Sorry, Chris, can't agree with you. I'm perfectly familiar with old fashioned pendulum metronomes, and over a three minute period they are as near perfect as makes no difference. They were of course, much more difficult to set to a precise tempo, but hey, whats 118 to 120 anyway. Set ANY pop/rock drummer up against a metronome and you'll get the same result as against a drum machine.
Frank is right. It's actually the temporal innaccuracies of the human that make the difference. It's why we like 50's music rather that 80's electronic music with drum machines. It's precisely because Allison isn't a metronome that we like the music.
I'm not knocking JI. You have to be on top of your game to play in a trio. There is nowhere to hide. I had a trio for a while, and I loved it (more money,of course!). I had to concentrate 100% ALL the time. Zero tolerance, no bum notes, no "rest" periods. Our drummer kept me on the straight and narrow. I never played that well before or since.
