I'm a guitar nut - even own my own business building handwound pickups and handmade amps. I've owned a bunch of guitars but keep coming back to Fenders, particularly Tele's and Strat's. Tommy Allsup's tone inspired me to buy a Strat - particularly on "Wishing", as well as Sonny Curtis' tone on the Nashville sessions, as well as Buddy's on the Apartment tapes.
I had a J-200 to match Buddy's tone, and man was that a great sounding guitar - had it for a long time but let it go, along with Rickenbacker 325's - had a few of those. Fun guitars as well.
For amps, I love a good point to point wired tweed Fender Bassman. There's nothing it doesn't do well. I also have built many Standel 25L15 clone amps - those are a treat to hear. Sonny Curtis most likely played through one on his work with Buddy in Nashville.
I believe Buddy had a '53-4 Fender Pro with a 15 inch speaker - I've owned one of these and they aren't very good sounding amps, compared to others. Petty had a '52 or earlier Pro in his studio, which I believe had a field coil type speaker, which gave an incredible tone - and this is what Holly played on nearly everything in Petty's studio.
So yep - I'm big inspired by my heroes and I've learned that this is what drives the guitar industry!
