Ford offered a retro attempt at the Thunderbird, but it was not a commercial success.

Their newer Mustangs have been much more successful, but it seems 1960s retro cars have a wider appeal to a larger segment of the car buying market. 1950s retro cars aren't being made.

The PT Cruiser only lasted a short while. The VW Beetle has been redone.

Yes American cars had character in the 1950s. It seems, for better or worse, safety has taken centre stage over style.
