 It's more complex than that. It's about brand visibility.

Elvis's image is always out there. Yes, he was a much bigger star than Buddy, but Buddy was no slouch. He was likely the second biggest figure in the early days of rock 'n' roll.

Everybody has heard of Elvis. I would wager (in fact, I know) that most people under the age of 35 haven't heard of Buddy Holly.

I wouldn't argue that Elvis's legacy has been cheapened. The merchandise drives people to hear his music. I have probably 25-30 Waylon T-shirts (I actually get one each month as part of a subscription!), probably 10-15 each of Van Halen and The Who, 5 Lynyrd Skynyrd... not a single Buddy Holly T-shirt. I own more RATT T-shirts than I do Buddy Holly T-shirts, because they're more available.

Now, I love RATT, but that's absolutely crazy.

Give it a couple of generations and Buddy's legacy will effectively disappear. That would be a real shame.
