it is true that world war two brought an abundance of apple imagery in its musical lexicon. "don't sit under the apple tree" "i'll be with you in apple blossom time", and that renee has picked up on this as a metaphor for innocence, the pre-nuclear, if you will, society, is evident. the apple becomes a symbol of that which is lost. rock and roll is then viewed by magritte as the post-exilic soundscape, and through this lens of electronic and elemental discovery he invites us to examine what has been lost, and casts our imaginations ahead to that which can be reconciled. the apple becomes that which is lost, and the '50's become a period of wandering, as summed up in the opus of dion. george, the non-existentialist of the post exile musical expressionists, sums up the realization of the post-exile generation, in his re-constructionist extrapolation "not guilty", when he asserts, in this anthem for what would become known as "the me generation", "i don't want to upset the apple cart, i only want what i can get".
this depicts for us,a renee not the looking back at the innocence lost, but rather the one who looks ahead, forward, at the promise the apple still engenders, and asks each of us, "will you take a bite?" or even, in the lens of the post modernists, "bite me". sometimes a lollipop is more than a lollipop, but renee tells us that the apple will always be the apple. for further examination of the apple in the post nuclear exegesis of the twentieth century i refer you to bill griggs apt deconstruction of the symbolism of don mclean found in the archives of the rockin 50's website.
