I believe you are correct. Superstitions arise from the observation of coincidences. An alleged virgin accidentally falls into the volcano one time, coincidentally it doesn't erupt, and a tradition is born. This "three" bit is just that; nothing more than a modern day superstition/urban legend. Given the sheer number of celebs, many always dying throughout the year, it isn't so much that they die in threes as the living that group them into those sets. (Just this afternoon a local on-air personality observed that with the death of Karl Mauldin, two sets of three were completed.) Heck, we'll even elevate the status of a minor personality so as to fit our contrived "pattern." Still, it is interesting to speculate on "who is next", even if it is a silly morbid game somewhat akin to telling campfire spook stories. It would interest me to know who came up with the notion originally and when. Whoever it was, I bet he was an excellent manipulator that may have gone on to great things as a hypnotist. At least he planted a powerful suggestion that has taken root in the collective consciousness.
