The biggest difference was that fans were allowed to hear Johnny Mathis' voice age and get better.
In October of 1958, Buddy stepped up to the microphone and belted out "True Love Ways", "Raining In My Heart" and the others, showing the world that he was much more than a Lubbock, Texas rockabilly singer. More than 50 years later, those songs sound as though they were recording this morning. Although he was just barely 22, his heart, his voice, and his talent was and still is timeless.
Had he lived, who knows, he might have dueted with Bing Crosby or possibly Nick Winters.
Peace,
Randy Steele
