At least Buddy and the Crickets never indulged in drugs worse than tobacco, according to Niki Sullivan. Perspective also has to be kept. Social attitudes towards smoking were the polar opposite of what they are today. And I don't believe most '50s rock 'n' rollers indulged in drugs; that was left to the Beatles, Stones, etc. in the mid and late '60s.
