Could somebody enlighten me on drug use among rock 'n' rollers in the '50s?
We know that Hank Williams and Johnny Cash were alcoholics. Jerry Lee Lewis at one point after his '50s heyday was an alcoholic, and Bill Griggs has stated on the board his experience attempting to interview a drunken Jerry Lee. Frankie Lymon died of a heroin overdose, a drug he was supposedly introduced to at age 15.
I'm no expert on this topic, but I've always had the notion that drug use, particularly marijuana, was much more prevalant among jazz artists of the era and it took the Beatles and Stones to popularize its use in the rock industry. Is this generally true or was substance abuse more common among the rockers in the rockin '50s? Niki Sullivan went on record claiming that the Crickets never used, and I've never heard stories about Elvis, Chuck, Fats, Little Richard, etc. etc. doing so at that time (we all know what happened to Elvis much later).
Can anybody shed further light and add to this?
