Hi Ingrid-

I agree with alot that you said about the book but like alot of people, some of it leaves me scratching my head.

Here is something that I find interesting: On page 281 of Peggy Sue’s book, she speaks about the misinformation that the movie “The Buddy Holly Story” spawned. She questions the story about how “Cindy Lou” became “Peggy Sue”. Her claim is this--“If The Crickets had been recording the song using the words “Cindy Lou” and then changed it, Norman, surely, would have kept it on tape, as he kept everything.”

In Bill Griggs’ interview with Peggy Sue on December 12, 1987, Bill Griggs’ asked Peggy Sue if she knew how the name change on the song came about and according to the interview, this is what she said:

* “Hmmm. I did not know that Buddy really had a niece named Cindy Lou. To my knowledge, and with my discussions with Buddy, and Jerry, and the others about “Peggy Sue”, and the original song “Cindy Lou”, When Buddy originally named the song “Cindy Lou”, he thought most of the songs which were hitting at the time were rhythm and blues and he thought “Cindy Lou” sounded more southern. It was very good business and showed the maturity that Buddy had. I thought that that was the reason that he had picked “Cindy Lou”.

In addition to this printed interview, there is a photo of a page from Buddy Holly’s music notebook (actually The Crickets notebook) which has a song list containing these songs in this order:

Tutti-Frutti
I’m Left You’re Right She’s Gone
Rip It Up
Long Tall Sally
Ready Teddy
Slipin’ & Slidin’
Bo Diddley
Cindy Lou
Makin Me A Used To Be
I Got A Woman
Why Did You Leave
Hound Dog
Don’t Be Cruel
Be Bop A Lula
That’s All Right
Rock Around With Olivee (this is how it is spelled in the book)
I Forgot To Remember
The Great Pretender
Trying To Get To You
Lawdy Lawdy Miss Clawdy

Does anyone else see CINDY LOU? I think Peggy Sue must not have remembered this interview.

In addition, I am not entirely sure about this but I do not think Buddy’s niece’s name was actually “Lou”…can you answer that Bill?

This is proof again that fans owe Bill a big debt of thanks for his mission to bring the stories to the fans. This is a great interview. Bill, do you sell copies of this interview?
