Honestly guys, I too really like Peggy. But I have spoke to family members and some other people who were around during that time.
Word has it, and this is not coming from me, the only time Peggy came to the Holley's house was when Maria and Buddy were married. My grandmother rarely spoke of Peggy and both my uncles agree that Peggy was not close to the family nor did she hang out with Buddy as much as she claims.
Buddy invested his time into working for Holley Tile and practicing his music with the band. Band practice was serious and didn't not involve girlfriends in the mix.
Even my Mother, before she had Alzheimers only remembered meeting Peggy once when Buddy and Maria were married. Simply put by the family members that I have spoken with that were there have stated, "the name of the song was changed because JI said he could get into Peggy's britches if they changed it". Whether it was JI mouthing off (which I believe a lot of ego headed guys do) or if he really acheived his goal after the song title was changed, who knows, but I believe that is why Buddy changed the name, cuz it was no big deal and he was doing JI a favor.
I do not believe Buddy had a hidden crush on Peggy. Buddy was up front and spoke his mind. When he wanted something, he went after it and nothing stopped him. This is how he did everything. He spoke his mind with JI and if he had feelings for Peggy, he would have told him. He told JI the truth about many other things that could have ended their relationship, why hold onto this secret?
In my opinion, he would have found a way to come right out and tell her and let JI know it too.
I also find it a little sensational that Peggy insuates homosexuality between Buddy and JI. I don't believe that at all and I would definately like to see her journal entry on this one.
It bother's me that Peggy makes herself out to be innocent of everything and victimized by everyone. She does a good job of writing to be naive when she needed to be and smarter than anyone around her when needed. In fact, the book makes her out to be the most level-headed teenager I ever read about. I think this book is more or less what Peggy would have liked to happen rather than fact based. Just what a book needs to be made into a movie 'eh?
I think she was a young kid, star stricken and dreamy-eyed that she was involved with a musician who was making it big.
I am in no way defending Maria, but I do think believe that Peggy embellished and exaggerated some things. I feel this, because I grew up as a Holley and I know the character of the Holleys. Some of those things she claimed, are just too far from the character of the Holley family itself. Another reason I believe this is because I am a professional musician and have been for since I was 27. I traveled on tour with a band full of men, me being the only girl.
And let me tell you one thing, the term, "what happens in vegas, stays in vegas", is correct. First of all yes, there are groopies in every town. They flock to the musicians and most young boys cannot resist. Also, your bandmates are your family. It is like a marriage. When I wrote my songs, it was never uncommon for us to bat ideas off of each other and changing titles of songs, sheesh, on my last CD, I did it on three different songs. It was at the suggestion of other members too. So all this drama, is just that.
The book it good, but fact based is another issue. Until Peggy can really back up these things, I feel it is one-sided. I still admire her, but after reading it, I have reconsidered my thoughts on a lot of the claims she has made as to being more wishful thinking rather than fact.
I guess if I wrote a book about myself, I would have to change some things too, to keep it interesting.
No matter what, the book is a decent read. I was entertained by it and I still think she had a right to come out with her take on how she felt about things and how she wanted things to be during that time.
Sincerely,
Ingrid
