and red is truly one who should be held in high regard. the fifties were different times. the joke i prefaced was from the early seventies. and, cleftonefan, you are right, he did try to keep a squeaky clean image on his show. i think he must have been guesting on dean martin's variety show when he launched this joke.
it had dialogue like: q:whats your name? a:tex
q:what part of texas are you from? a: oh, i am from louisianna. q:why do they call you tex? a: you wouldn't want them to call me louise would ya? q: the only thing from texas is steers and queers, which are you? a: mooooooo!
of course, i could be wrong. red also was known for risque material when he was the emccee of the walkathons and dance marathons of the early depression.
some of the stories i have collected about him, i believe.
they are, however, not easy to reconcile with his beloved
image.
