I actually met Waylon Jennings several years before I finally saw him in concert. My high school buddy informed me Waylon would be making an in-store appearance in Torrance, CA (this was circa '73-'74). Mr. Jennings was rather somber and reluctant to talk about the circumstances of February of 1959.
When I finally saw him in concert was the first BHMS Convention I attended in 1979 where he made an appearance following The Crickets (he actually appeared from the back of the stage as The Crickets were playing). Bill Griggs and I commented how hot and intense J.I. was on the drums and to me it sort of overshadowed Waylon's interminably long concert which followed. It was clear most of the Lubbock audience had come to hear Waylon Jennings, not to remember Buddy Holly. There was some grumbling in the press from BHMS members that it turned to be a Waylon Jennings Concert, rather than a Buddy Holly Tribute. However Waylon's fans got their money's worth as he played a lot of his Country hits, and we all knew it was going for a very good cause, the building of the Buddy statue. Bill Griggs also was satisfied, saying in Reminiscing that he liked Waylon's different, unorthodox approach to C&W music.
