And your point is? Some cursory internet research this afternoon found 121 covers of a single Chuck Berry song (Johnny B Goode) -- including one by Buddy Holly. I've given up tracking covers of Link Wray's "Rumble" after Mike C was unkind to me about it but at last count I was over 100. A lot can happen in 60 years but both these individuals could lay claim to being central figures - Berry in the development of rock n roll and Wray in the subsequent development of rock guitar. I tend to agree with Mr C that it's futile to try to pinpoint a single central figure of this or any genre (although we probably remain at odds over how or whether to define rock in roll). But if you want to point to an individual who was central to popularizing it globally, I don't think you can go past Presley.
