Acording to Rock On, a book by Norman Nite, the broken speaker idea started with country singer Marty Robbins. The song, Don't Worry was released in 1961. The record featured the guitar solo with the broken speaker. It's not likely Buddy Holly used this idea. At least long time fans like me, have not heard a Buddy Holly recording using this broken speaker
idea. Don't Worry by Marty Robbins can be heard on you tube. Hope this helps!
