Mike Bell-
Actually, the correct date that Buddy Holly and The Crickets appeared on Ed Sullivan was January 26, 1958.
As for what was happening between Mr. Sullivan and the boys from Lubbock, here is what I wrote previously on the board in a response to a post from "D." (I received this information from Jerry Allison).

“Buddy Holly & the Crickets made their second appearance on the Ed Sullivan show & performed "Oh Boy!" It wasn't quite as successful as their first. Ed Sullivan, who had interviewed Buddy only the previous month & got his name right, called him "Buddy Hollered" this time around.”

The friction between The Crickets and Mr. Sullivan reportedly started at rehearsal.
Originally, there was a martial arts-type of act scheduled to perform on the show just before The Crickets. For reasons unknown, that act was dropped from the line-up, forcing The Crickets to move up. When The Crickets were called to the stage, they were no where to be found, much to the dismay of Mr. Sullivan and his staff. Unaware that they were being searched for, the guys were underneath The Ed Sullivan Theatre, admiring the extensive piping/plumbing.
When The Crickets were finally located, they hurried onto the stage for their rehearsal. As they did so, an obviously annoyed Mr. Sullivan is reported to have remarked, “Apparently The Crickets are not very excited about being on The Ed Sullivan Show.” Buddy Holly heard this as he walked past Mr. Sullivan and responded in kind with his own jab, something like, “Well I hope they are more excited about it than I am”.
Peace,
