**** Ed's attitude toward rock 'n' roll was highly favorable in contrast to so many others of the day--Arthur Godfrey and Steve Allen, to name just a few. (Allen's having Elvis sing "Hound Dog" to a real hound dog, or reading "Be-Bop-a-Lula" lyrics as if they were a Shakespearian sonnet, may seem funny today, but they reflected Allen's deep antipathy toward rock 'n' roll. ****
Steve Allen couldn't have been too against rock 'n roll... After all, he was the one man in "the industry" to give an up and coming rock 'n roller his big break after the singer was turned down by all the other network shows of the day...
After hearing one audition of the singer with Steve tapping his pencil along with the playing, he said "I want that man doing that song on my show Sunday night..."
The man was a relatively unknown (at that time) singer from Ferriday, Louisiana... The song "Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On" and the singer is of course Jerry Lee Lewis...
JLL was invited back almost immediately to do an encore of the song on the show... And, Steve had Jerry Lee back to do the national debut of another smash single "Great Balls Of Fire"...
