Sid, in my America, parents in the '50s had less and less control over their kids' spending. In a post-WW II America, certainly in NY, between allowances and work, kids were much freer than their pre-war counterparts. These teenagers with money provided a new market for the independent labels, and that new market made them successful. Certainly, not every kid had money, and parent acceptance waas critical, but the parents' strict control seldom carried over into music, at least in my world.
remember?-
"Where did you go?"
"Out."
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
When the market went from teen to pre-teen, for Frankie Lymon and later for the Beatles, parents had more power over the younger kids.
