I don't suppose any of us would seriously claim that any of our singers was a patch on the Americans that they emulated. I agree that Johnny Kidd & the Pirates came closest.

Recently, I have spoken to a guy who saw Gene and Eddie on the 1960 UK tour. His abiding memory is not of them but of Billy Fury. All reports of his stage act are that it was sensational and this would have been before he was made to go down the commercial pop route.

I'm surprised that no-one picked up on Jack name checking Lonnie Donegan. He, surely, was our most influential artist of that period in terms of the people he inspired to form groups. I always thought that this was slightly bizarre - a banjo player from a jazz band, recycling versions of Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie songs and helping to change the direction of British music.
