Lonnie Donegan is truly known in the States as a "two hit wonder" with the two Top 10's coming half a decade apart.
No wonder he's primarily associated with England if he left Scotland at an early age. It does explain the Celtic-sounding name.
When I was a young boy, my family attended church services at Angeles Mesa Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. During the summer of 1961 a group of young parishioners including myself would pile on a flatbed truck and head on out to Hermosa Beach almost every day. As we rode along, the girls would sing the hits of the day at the top of their lungs, which included "The Mountain's High", "Sea Of Heartbreak" and especially "Does Your Chewing Gum, etc." Since the Presbyterian Church was founded in Scotland, that seems amusingly appropriate. So it brings back fond memories. I recall how during the British Invasion bands such as the Kinks would cite Donegan as an influence. It was also recounted how a lot of the bands such as the Beatles began as skifflers. Stan Freberg in 1956 in his spoof of "Rock Island Line" called it "and his Sniffle Group."
