 If an act was on Ed Sullivan that it was OK with my parent. He was the seal of approval in my parent's eyes. I'll bet that was not unusual in many households.

I remember, in fact, how my parents called me out of my room to watch the Dave Clark Five one Sunday night. They were OK because Ed put them on his show.
