Actually, Dick Clark lost his Saturday Night Beechnut Show because of the Payola scandal. He was also forced to give up holdings in certain record companies (like Swan, Jamie, etc..) so he didn't come away compeletely unscathed. Unlike Freed, however, Clark was able to stay focused and was able to rebuild his image and career. Certainly The Twist and Chubby Checker (who was black by the way) became pop culture because of Clark / Bandstand. And it was most likely the overwhelming success of this song that took some of the glare away from the payola scandal for Clark.
