Went to see The Crickets at Chingford Assembly Rooms (that well known glamour spot of North East London!) c.2002 and who should walk through the hall carrying his guitar but Albert Lee.
He played the whole show with the boys, adding his beautiful chords and phrases to the traditional backings. Sonny Curtis announced that Albert had saved them from themselves back in the 1970s when he told them they were just going through the motions and should get their act together.
Albert was very deferential throughout the show, especially to Sonny, just happy to stay in the background. I was looking forward to the middle eight of 'When You Ask About Love' but when it came to it they both just looked at each other, each expecting the other to play it. Nice moment from two great gentlemen.
Was this the last time The Crickets were in the UK?
