HK's choice of 1958, while predictable, is a very interesting one. Although as a child I purchased more than a dozen 45s during 1956, 1957 as I stated recently was a year I completely missed out on musically due to my preoccupation with swimming pools & movie stars (not to mention dinosaurs).
I'm sure I'm not alone for my age group. 1958 brought a lot of seven and eight year olds into record stores not for "Rumble" (which I bought at year's end), but for the numerous novelty records which soared high on the charts that particular year. After I started listening to the radio, my tastes expanded so that I was listening not just to Top 40, but Country & Western on KXLA, Rhythm & Blues on KGFJ (where my father was the all nite deejay in the early 40s), and even MOR on KLAC.
That being said, toward the end of that year I started to explore 1957 and have to say that I side with the majority for Sounds such as these (some will be more familiar than others):
"That'll Be The Day"-The Crickets
"Oh Boy" " "
"Not Fade Away" " "
"Words Of Love"-Buddy Holly (w/ inst. acct.)
"Flying Saucers Rock 'n' Roll"-Billy Lee Riley & the
Little Green Men
"Red Hot" " "
"Pearly Lee" " "
"Rock & Roll Guitar"-The New Blockbusters (from the decidedly Grade "B" 1957 drive-in film "Rock All Night")
"I'm Sorry"-The Platters
"He's Mine"-The Platters
"Black Slacks"-Joe Bennett & the Sparkletones
"Boppin' Rock Boogie"-Joe Bennett & the Sparkletones
"B-I-Bickey-Bi-Bo-Bo-Go"-Gene Vincent & the Blue Caps
"Crazy Legs" " "
"Important Words" " "
"If You Can't Rock Me"-The Strikes
"Red Thunderbird"-Lynn Howard & the Accents
"Tonight"-The Love Notes
"United"-The Love Notes
"Sweetest One"-The Crests (featuring Johnny Maestro)
"My Juanita"- " "
"No One To Love" " "
"Wish She Was Mine" " "
"Freight Train"-Chas McDevitt Skiffle Group feat. Nancy Whiskey
"Happy Happy Birthday Baby"-The Tune Weavers
"Over The Mountains, Across The Sea"-Johnnie & Joe
"Long Lonely Nights"-Lee Andrews & the Hearts
"Whole Lot Of Shakin' Goin' On"-JLL
"It'll Be Me"-JLL
"Bye Bye Love"-The Everly Brothers
"Wake Up Little Suzie" " "
"Mean Woman Blues"-Elvis
"Jailhouse Rock" " "
"Susie Q"-Dale Hawkins (& the Hawks)
"Kisses Sweeter Than Wine"-Jimmie Rodgers
"Hook, Line, And Sinker"-Bill Haley And The Comets
...with a whole lot of stick shakin' to be goin' on from this outstanding year!
p.s. posters of this board are to be commended for getting the years right as I knew they would, something a lot of deejays then and now could not do when playing flashbacks.
