Tom-
I’m a bit confused by your posting about allegations and insinuations? I hate to break it to you but I don’t do either of those. If I have something to say to you, I will say it, period. And there were no qualifying postings from me either.
I am not sure what you wanted me to hold aside as I did not imply anything about you. I know that you had issues with Val and that has nothing to do with me. See? I did not imply. I said it. I also said that I consider you a great fan, an encyclopedia of knowledge, and said that in some ways, you remind me of Bill Griggs. Again, I did not imply anything. I have been a fan of yours, simple as that!
As far as “when can we expect your collection to become public?”…You can expect it right now but as I said in a previous post, collectors owe us nothing. Let me be clear so you don’t think I am insinuating anything--- I don’t owe you anything and you don’t owe me anything either. I am very proud of my efforts in collecting Buddy Holly things that mean something to me but those things make me no better than any fan who is passionate about the music.
A few years ago, on another Buddy Holly fan board, I asked about people’s collections. A friend of mine commented, “Is there a contest? We are all fans. Isn’t that enough?” The comment stuck with me and is just part of the reason that I did not answer it when a similar question was asked recently on Rockin50s. In short, I won’t ever make my collection public because of pressure from you or anyone else. If I want to share it, I will. In any case, you will not be a part of the decision process.
As far as your proclamation of the publicizing of your own collection, good for you! I have known for sometime that you had a great collection and one to be proud of! It was a wonderful thing that Bill Griggs allowed you to be one of the first to the Clovis stuff. It is great that you have been so willing to educate the Holly fans or collectors. Chris Rees recognized this (and I did too, by the way). I think that is cool and I know it to be true because of conversations that the two of us have had over the years.
In saying this, I must add that if you think that you were one of the people that I referred to in saying there are a couple of collectors that I would crawl to see their collection, I hate to break it to you but I WAS NOT REFERRING TO YOUR COLLECTION. Sorry. Why did I not refer to your collection? Because you HAVE already shared it! Thank you for doing so.
I am very aware of the bootlegging incident and who the “involved” people were. I had discussions with Bill Griggs and two other people about it. And I am aware of the flying accusations about who did what. I never judged it because I do not have the intimate knowledge of exactly what happened. While it is none of your business, I will tell you that yes I too have been the victim before. In my story, I was 100% innocent and it still cost me a friendship that I miss to this day.
It must really sting for you to have been accused of bootlegging because you have given much time to the Buddy Holly community, including fans such as Bill Griggs, Chris Rees, Kevin Terry, Roddy Jordan, and myself to name a few. You have taught me several things about Buddy Holly and The Crickets and I am grateful for this. So now you share NOTHING? Fine with me as I cannot control what you do. Again, for the record (no pun intended), you were NOT one of the collectors that I was referring to in my earlier postings.
Regarding the Big Bopper promos, I have never gone back on my word to contact you when they become available. The original owner of the tape did not communicate with me for the longest time…over two years…and I kept calling, writing, again and again. FINALLY, I received a response----telling me they had lost part of their family in a fire. Yes Tom, multiple members of their family…ALL KIDS….DIED IN A FIRE ON THEIR PROPERTY. In my book, that tragedy took a backseat to any of my collecting efforts. This person asked me to back away and let the healing to begin to whatever level it could. So out of respect, I backed off and did not bother them!!! A person can never get over this and only hope to get through it. Does this satisfy your questions about the Big Bopper promos and part of the reasons that you have “yet to hear them?” Feel better now?
Let this please be clear---I did not intentionally attack you nor did I disrespect you Tom---EVER. However, you cannot say the same and you know it. But I will not discuss it on this board.
If you want to visit here, you are welcome to do so. If you choose to go away, as you have threatened before, you will be sorely missed, as the good posters always are.
Peace,
Randy Steele
