This is the thing that I locked in on, Mike.
"The better that Google knows you and your surfing habits the easier it will be to serve up relevant ads."
They may know my habits, but their marketing is not relevant, and seems to be "too much, too late." I can't tell you how many times I bought something on the internet, only to be bombarded for weeks with ads from the company(s) I did (or didn't) buy from. By that time, I've already made my choices so those ads directed at me are a waste of their time. Somebody who draws out a purchasing decision over a long period of time might possibly be swayed by ads, but they're probably getting hit by most of the vendors they've visited so where's the advantage?
Internet ads may or may not be effective, but they're generally harmless, Many TV ads are either too loud, pointless, unfunny, hard to hear, poorly made, or juvenile. Oh, for the days of Stan Freberg.
