Buddy was the typical 21 year old, spending money like it grew on trees, thinking more was on the way and the hits would keep happening. Problem was, the record industry at the time was largely controlled by less than honest connections and money often went to "kingpins" of another sort. It is hard to convince Holly fans otherwise, but remember even Bill Grigg's research (and court proceedings a few years ago) proved the Petty paperwork was on the up & up and Norman wasn't holding anything back, but the mafia run record company was.

Frank Blanas' new book on Norman goes into depth about this fact, and in my documentary I will show proof (telegrams) that Norman was pressuring the record company until Buddy's death to get "missing" funds, or the balance that was due.

IF the statement was ever made to the effect "Buddy will be dead before he sees any money" or whatever the supposed quote was, Norman was likely referring to interaction with the record company that it was going to be an unlikely task. Billboard magazine also shows Buddy Knox was embroiled with a lawsuit for royalties owing just a matter of months after "Party Doll" was a smash. I know firsthand from Buddy's stories that the threats from the record company were very much to the same effect. "You'll be dead before you see any money"...scary.

Unfortunately trying to rectify a falsehood even with proof is like banging your head against a brick wall to opinionated Holly fans. So to go back to the original topic, "how much is true"...Bill Griggs had paperwork proof, Blanas brought out more facts, and I have evidence that Norman was pressuring the record company just as much as Buddy was pressuring Norman to look into the problem and the blame has for decades been unjustifiably cast.
