I wasn’t going to weigh in here again but in the face of yet another offhand and scornful response from our esteemed author, I’d like to explain clearly why this matters to me.
My grandfather lost all his five brothers in the First World War. They and others who fell with them are remembered each year with poppies, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields”.
My mother lost her only brother, my uncle, in the Second World War. He and others who fell with him are remembered each year with poppies, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields”.
I lost two dear friends in Vietnam. They and others who fell with them are remembered each year with poppies, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields”.
Lest anyone weigh in with a smart-aleck response like “that’s just you, who cares?” I’d like to point out that such experiences are shared by millions of families around the world for whom the Flanders Fields poppies hold a special meaning.
And “Lest We Forget” – to borrow a phrase from rituals commemorating such slaughter - it’s still happening.
That’s why it’s just not good enough to say, “It’s my book, I can call it what I like”.
I’m posting this under my own name rather than my pseudonym so that anyone who wants to slag me off for it can do so, as far as is possible, to my face. Have a nice weekend.
