The scenario Robbie Robertson writes about is entirely possible. A "blown" speaker would still work, although the sound would be somewhat distorted. Guitar distortion was not a "thing" in the 50s, but Buddy could have easily blown a speaker in his stage amp, thought it sounded cool that way, and left it as it was instead of replacing or re-coning the speaker. It certainly would have sounded louder than a normal amp. He was using a Fender Bassman amp later on in 1959 on the Winter Dance Party tour, so he apparently went for a big guitar sound on stage.

Regarding guitar distortion at that time, the first famous recorded example of it was Grady Martin's baritone guitar on Marty Robbins' "Don't Worry," recorded in 1960. It was accidental - the result of a bad channel on the mixing board - but everyone liked it and left it on the recording.
