Hey Baby, for reasons unknown to me, has been a huge marching band song for decades, probably because of the sing-a-long aspect. I've heard at numerous high school and college athletic events over the years. I think the fact that it was featured in the now iconic movie Dirty Dancing has certainly helped elevate its profile.

As for the people in Ireland, or the UK for that matter knowing the song, Bruce Chanel did tour the UK on the heels of its success in 1962. In fact, the Beatles and Roy Orbison were on tour with him. John Lennon famously spent time with Chanel's harmonica/harp player Delbert McClinton, who taught Lennon a few tricks on the instrument which John incorporated into the intro of "Love Me Do."
