This topic brings up an interesting quandary. Alan Freed is credited with popularizing if not coining the term "Rock 'n' Roll". He aggressively promoted The Platters enthusiastically as a "Rock 'n' Roll Vocal Group". Was he wrong and we here in 2017 are right? And The Platters featured Rock instrumentation such as electric guitars, saxophones, and drums even on big ballad hits such as "My Prayer". This was in contrast to their contemporaries such as Pop Vocal Groups like The Four Lads and The Four Aces, who did not have this instrumentation on their records.
