I say that we should enjoy the Platters regardless of what genre they could be labeled as. Keep in mind that Rock Around The Clock was a rewrite of Rock This Joint-a country/western swing type song. We could open this to the debate as to whether Rock Around The Clock is a true rock and roll song (of course it is) or we could call Maybelline a country song since it was a rewrite of Ida Red. Basically, the early years of the Rock and Roll Era gave us a fine variety of great acts. One of the reasons for this was that this scene was developing so what could have been rock and roll was open to debate. Even after February 3, 1959, songs like Old Rivers and El Paso entered the rock charts and continuted to muddy the water.
