The easy option is to take the word of the official report and experts and blame it on pilot error. But I don't buy this at all.

So what was the cause then? 2 things here, that will no doubt cause debate.
1. The plane was loaded too heavily, if you take into account their luggage AND their heavy winter coats, I think they pushed it too far.

2. This will cause serious debate. They forgot to fuel the plane. I think this is what Jerry Dwyer alluded to all those years when he said he knew something. I believe that both he and Roger Peterson each thought the other had refuelled the plane, and the result was that neither had. This also would explain the lack of fire or fuel spillage at the crash site. You'd expect fire and spillage from a fuelled plane that crashes within a few minutes of take off, with a full tank. But there was neither. It's simple to me.

If you combine these two reasons, I think you have a pretty good cause for what happened. Roger got that plane up, was struggling with the load affecting his trim characteristics...too heavy in the tail area, hence he took the snow off a barn roof, he was battling to keep the height, and then realised he was also out of gas! I do not believe it was pilot flying error at all, Roger knew that plane well. The errors were made prior to take off.
