Hey Darren, that's pretty neat! I had not consciously noticed that before, as I too am a guitarist who plays both Maybe Baby and Pretty Woman.

Technically, if both songs were to be played in the key of A - which is the key in which Maybe Baby was recorded, while Pretty Woman was recorded in E - the first 5 bass notes would be:

Maybe Baby: A / A / Db / E / Gb

Pretty Woman: A / A / Db / E / G

There is of course a technical difference in the rhythm and number of notes played between the two songs, but it seems that this similarity is what your ear caught - thanks for pointing this out! Pablo Picasso is widely quoted as having said that “good artists borrow, great artists steal.” I'm sure everyone here would agree that both Buddy and Roy were great artists.

On a related note (pun intended), when I was playing with a classic rock band several years ago, we played a "mashup" of Pretty Woman and Day Tripper by the Beatles, as both songs have markedly similar opening notes. However, we eventually stopped doing this, as it became rhythmically confusing switching between the two songs.

Cheers and Rave On,
