If all that is true, sid, how come people are always going on about how generous he was.... with that huge entourage of hangers on that he had, could he not have employed his old workmates?
....and Cleftonefan, sid's post doesn't quite rhyme with yours, does it. I read your post a couple of times, and I thought, who is he talking about here, Elvis or Pat Boone?
I agree with the view that his army service turned him into an "established" artiste, in the sense of being accepted across the ages. We had a case in the UK of our no.1 star of the time (Terry Dene) being destroyed by NOT going into the army when called up, even though he had a genuine medical reason. Mum and Dad love a uniform.
I was never a real Elvis fan, because he was never quite heavy enough musically for me. I preferred JLL and LR, and then later Eddie Cochran... which explains why I went on to become a Status Quo fan. But I was never really interested in his colour or manners or generosity... in fact his deference to Ed Sullivan rather turned me off him as a person, but didn't really affect my opinions of the music.
