Not only is it difficult to fathom the passage of time,
it's also sad to find ourselves in an era where those in charge of the Holly/Crickets musical legacy have abdicated all responsibility to honour Buddy's memory in a significant and audacious way.
I know that the profit margin for cds and records has dropped to a fraction of it's once mighty total, but I'm sure there would be profit if a new legacy release was done properly, and I mean superbly. Buddy deserves nothing less.
To begin, everything would have to be direct analogue, masted to vinyl with no digital incursion.
My ideal reissue campaign would begin with a series of 12"
vinyl ep's, all mastered at 45 rpm for maximum fidelity
and sonic punch.
These could all contain 8 songs each, 4 per side, and still allow for 45 rpm cutting.
I would keep the themes simple, 3 of the series could be
classic hits and influential tracks, beginning with the 20
that appeared on the S. Hoffman set years ago.
One of the 3 should feature all of the selections
that the late Tommy Allsup contributed to, thereby
doubling as a tribute to that great man.
One should include the 4 strings recordings, all in true stereo, which has not happened often.
One should include 8 of the strongest early tracks from both Clovis and Nashville.
I would not dedicate any such high fidelity pressing to the earliest material, that of buddy and bob, or the Peeples
tape. Not because they don't have historical impact in their own way, but simply because the original recording quality does not merit a high fidelity release.
Of course, one of the series would have to include the 6 original compositions from the apartment tapes, augmented by You're The One. Given more time to think, I would come up with an appropriate 8th selection.
So far, we are at an even half dozen high quality, all analogue, 8 selection, 45 rpm platters that would instantly become classics for the ages.
Yes, this would only total 48 tracks, but that is a significant enough slice of the total catalogue to further
enhance Buddy's status for generations to come.
Perhaps later, true high fidelity all analogue remasters of the 3 original albums could also be issued in regular 33 rpm, adding additional tracks to the high fidelity re issue total.
I say again, that although interesting, I would not advocate for any of the earliest lower fidelity Holly recordings to be given this legacy treatment, nor would I like any of the Norman Petty or Jack Hansen overdubs to be included (at least not on vinyl). Don't even mention the 80's debauchery!
But what of all the other interesting tracks, including the authorized overdubs mentioned above, the rest of the undubbed apartment tapes etc. as well as the rest of the high quality studio recordings from Clovis etc. not included on the 6 high quality vinyl platters?
This is where BlueRay enters the picture.
BluRay is a very high fidelity way to offer digitized versions of analogue recordings, at an affordable price.
Because a bluray disc can hold so much content compared to cd, all of it uncompressed, a catch all bluray would be a satisfactory way to complete the hi fidelity legacy reissue campaign.
ALSO: The bluray would have more than enough space to include every Holly/Crickets video known to exist.
If the as yet not shared home movies of the wedding, and Christmas 1958 footage could be included, it would cause a genuine buzz among fans and historians.
I would also do everything possible to include 2 or 3 of the very best previously released documentaries. Of these I consider the original "Arena" installment, circa 1980, prior to Paul McCartney altering the footage, and the quite recent (18 months ago?)U.K. one hour tribute to be the most important.
Lastly, the bluray disc would also have room for every minute of every Holly audio interview known to exist, even "the phone call".
I have always wished for such a legacy reissue campaign,
and would prefer that it coincide with a Holly birthday
anniversary, rather than an anniversary of the crash.
Since the 60th anniversary of the tragedy has come and gone without any such endeavor, the next great opportunity would
be to have the launch of the "Buddy Holly Legacy Reissue Series" coincide with the grand opening of the Buddy Holly Center for the Performing Arts in Lubbock.
Sure it's all something of a pipe dream, but all great ideas begin with an "If Only".
