Roddy, thanks for sharing this information.

Out of interest I looked Amburn up and this is what he says:

‘In 1958, Ritchie Valens briefly joined Buddy’s tour in Honolulu, performing at the civic auditorium. His appearance was arranged by local promoters Ralph Yempuku and Earl Finch, who’d been putting on rock shows in Hawaii for the past few months’. [Then there is some stuff about his looks and personal appearance] ‘His repertoire at the time included Little Richard’s ‘Jenny, Jenny’ and Chuck Berry’s ‘Sweet little Sixteen’ but when he sang them he substituted his own lyrics, improvised on the spot. Likeable and enthusiastic, he seemed to have no ego whatsoever and plied the established singers with intelligent questions but appeared to have made no impression on Buddy at this time’. So where does Amburn get this from? His book has no bibliography. There is a detailed acknowledgments section but these two Hawaiian guys are not named. They show up on Google searches as promoters.

I looked at the Wiki entry for Valens. It says: ‘In November, Valens flew to Hawaii, where he performed alongside Buddy Holly and Paul Anka.’

The same information appears on the Ritchie Valens website:

<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.ritchievalens.com/where-was-ritchie-valens.html">http://www.ritchievalens.com/where-was-ritchie-valens.html</a>

I am therefore guessing that Amburn is not referring to the February 1958 tour but to another tour, real or imaginary, in November 1958. Trouble is, Holly doesn’t seem to have made such a tour. Unless anyone knows better!

Later on, Amburn makes another reference to Valens, saying that he joined the GAC tour of US/Canada in the fall of 1958 ‘in certain cities’ (he doesn’t say which). However, Valens is not listed in the Goldrosen/Beecher Tour Dates section of their book.

What do you make of all this? Anything further from Dr. Jeff?
