My first thought was, as others have said, such a project would have to go through MEH. You'd really have no choice, as the closest witness to Buddy's life in New York. Perhaps we know as much as we will know, and can ever know about this period of his life, which was basically around 6 months. This is down to the meticulous research of our own Bill Griggs in his outstanding 'Day by Day' guide.

If you add to this, images of Buddy and MEH going for a late night stroll to a diner or a coffee house, coats covering pyjamas....although as the 6 months they lived in New York was September 58 thru January 59, you would think the weather was too cold for much midnight wandering. And the stories of Buddy hanging around Washington Square Park, maybe at first, September and October, but not when the coldness set in. I can't imagine the Texas boy doing that too much, can you?

I think this project wouldve been hard enough 20 years ago, but as the people involved and around grow less and less, I think it would be impossible now. You'd end up putting together facts already known from the work of Bill and other people, and retelling it as MEH tells it. Would it be worth it? If there were still an abundance of people left to put an accurate account down, then maybe. But sadly this isn't the case. We just have to imagine those jam sessions with Eddie Cochran and The Everlys, and the life he had those last month's in NYC. A time when Buddy was looking to grow and develop...quite literally. He had been working out, to build his thin figure up, he had a new hairstyle and the image caught in the Bruno Of Hollywood photo shoot. He was developing an interest in acting...attending classes with Lee Strasberg, and he had the idea of his Prism label and Lubbock recording studio in mind and in the pipeline. Truly, the guy had big plans. Was his marriage to MEH in trouble? Maybe he had grown tired of her ways...who really knows? Why would PSG lie in her book...she strikes me as an honest person...apparently Buddy had confided in his mum that the marriage was all but over. Only MEH knows the truth there, although there are conflicting things with that element as well. If he was so keen to get away, why did he call home from the tour so much? Or did he? MEH painted herself as the grieving widow in the immediate aftermath...yet met somebody new quite quickly. It all raises questions...answers to which we will more than likely never know. Perhaps we are better off not knowing, I don't know.

The things we do know, we should be grateful for. Buddy was an extremely talented musician, an innovator, and a guy who never had chance to show his full potential. But for his loss, music couldve been very different.
