As Buddy Holly tributes go, the "Not Fade Away" collection is my favorite. Marty Stuart continues to perform his rockin' version of "Crying Waiting Hoping" to this day.

In listening to the Chapin-Carpenter/Montgomery version of "Wishing," it sounds to me like a form of E7 is played where you are getting a C#m. Try playing a standard D chord, then remove your finger from the high E string and move down from A to Ab on the G string, and see what you think. Either way, it's a valid chord substitution. I am basing my earlier post off of Buddy's original recording, as he tended to play very straightforward major and minor chords.
